Week 11: From Dull of Hearing to Discerning

"From Dull of Hearing to Discerning" Hebrews 5:11-14

Day 1 -- When Hearing Becomes Dull

Read: Hebrews 5:11; Romans 10:17

Reflect: The danger in Hebrews 5 is not that Christ is insufficient, but that the hearers have
become sluggish toward His Word. Dull hearing often grows slowly through distraction,
unconfessed sin, cynicism, or familiarity with holy things. Yet the Lord exposes dullness to
restore us, not to crush us.

Respond: Ask the Lord to show you where your hearing has grown dull and to renew your
hunger for His voice.

Pray: Lord Jesus, open my ears again. Forgive my sluggishness, awaken my heart, and help
me receive Your Word with faith and obedience. Amen.
Day 2 -- The Basics Are Beautiful

Read: Hebrews 5:12; 1 Corinthians 15:1–4

Reflect: The “basic principles” are not embarrassing; they are foundational. Christ died for
our sins, was buried, rose again, and reigns as Savior. Maturity never means leaving these
truths behind. It means learning to build all of life on them.

Respond: Write down one foundational gospel truth you have become too familiar with, and spend time thanking God for it.

Pray: Father, keep me from despising the basics. Let the good news of Christ crucified and
risen become more precious to me, not less. Amen.
Day 3 -- Solid Food Is More of Christ

Read: Hebrews 5:13; Hebrews 7:23–25

Reflect: Solid food is not moving beyond Jesus. It is seeing more clearly who He is and
what He has done. His permanent priesthood, perfect sacrifice, and ongoing intercession
are deep nourishment for weary believers.

Respond: Identify one situation where you need to remember that Jesus is interceding for
you right now.

Pray: Lord Jesus, feed me with the truth of who You are. Teach me to rest in Your finished
work and Your present intercession. Amen.
Day 4 -- Trained by Constant Practice

Read: Hebrews 5:14; 2 Timothy 4:3–4

Reflect: Discernment is trained through repeated, obedient use of God’s Word. Paul warns
that people can refuse sound teaching and collect voices that satisfy their own desires. An
itching ear asks whether a message feels agreeable; a trained heart asks whether it is true,
faithful to Scripture, centered on Christ, and fruitful in holiness. Maturity receives
encouragement gratefully, but it also welcomes correction because Jesus is better than
every comforting myth.

Respond: Consider the voices that shape you most. Identify one message you are tempted
to accept because it agrees with your desires, test it by Scripture, and choose one concrete
act of obedience to the truth.

Pray: Holy Spirit, train my heart through Your Word. Guard me from choosing voices that
merely confirm my desires. Give me humility to receive sound teaching, courage to obey it,
and discernment that keeps me close to Christ. Amen.
Day 5 -- Grow Because You Are Held

Read: Hebrews 5:11–14; Philippians 1:6

Reflect: Hebrews warns us because perseverance matters, but it also points us to the
Christ who saves forever. God does not expose immaturity so we will despair. He calls us to
grow because He is committed to completing the work He began in us.

Respond: Thank God for one area where you have seen growth, and ask Him for grace in
one area where you still need maturity.

Pray: Father, thank You that You finish what You begin. Grow me in Christ, keep me from
dullness, and make me discerning, faithful, and joyful in the gospel. Amen.
