Week 14: Better Things
"Better Things" Hebrews 6:9-12
Day 1 — Better Things
Read: Hebrews 6:9; Romans 8:1–4
Reflect: The warning of Hebrews 6 is severe, but it is not the final word over everyone who hears it. The writer addresses the church as “beloved” and is persuaded of better things—realities that accompany salvation. God’s warnings expose false confidence, while his gospel directs believers to the saving work of Christ and the fruit his Spirit produces.
Gospel Focus: In Christ there is no condemnation. The better things of salvation begin not with your record, but with his righteousness, death, and resurrection received by faith.
Question: Do you tend to hear God’s warning with presumption or despair, and how does Christ correct that response?
Prayer: Father, let your warnings awaken me without driving me from Christ. Persuade my heart of the better things found in your Son. Amen.

Day 2 — God Does Not Forget
Read: Hebrews 6:10; Matthew 10:40–42
Reflect: God sees every act of love offered for his name. Service unnoticed by others is never hidden from him. Yet this is not a wage that places God in our debt. Every good work is born from grace, purified through Christ, and empowered by the Spirit. God remembers the fruit of his own gracious work in his children.
Gospel Focus: Jesus performed the perfect work you could not perform. Covered by his obedience, your imperfect service becomes a grateful offering rather than an attempt to earn acceptance.
Question: What hidden service feels forgotten, and how does God’s righteous remembrance encourage you?
Prayer: Faithful God, free me from serving for applause. Let the love of Christ move me to quiet faithfulness for your name. Amen.

Day 3 — Love for His Name
Read: Hebrews 6:6; 10:11–14
Reflect: Love for God’s name takes visible form in serving the saints. We do not love the church because every member is easy to love. We love because Christ has placed his name upon his people and loved us while we were undeserving. Gospel love becomes practical: it listens, gives, forgives, visits, prays, and remains.
Gospel Focus: Love begins with God, not with us. The Father sent his Son as the sacrifice for our sins, and the love we receive from Christ now flows toward his people.
Question: Which believer is God calling you to serve in a concrete way today?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you loved me and gave yourself for me. Make your love visible through my service to your people. Amen.

Day 4 — Earnest Until the End
Read: Hebrews 6:11; Philippians 2:12–13
Reflect: The writer desires each believer to show earnestness until the end. Diligence is not opposed to grace. God’s preserving power creates active perseverance. We work because God is at work in us. We pursue assurance not by staring endlessly at ourselves, but by looking to Christ and responding to his grace with present obedience.
Gospel Focus: Jesus endured to the end and now works in his people by the Spirit. Your diligence does not complete his salvation; it displays his life within you.
Question: What faithful step have you delayed that you can take today in dependence on God?
Prayer: God of grace, rescue me from sluggishness. Work in me the desire and strength to follow Christ earnestly to the end. Amen.

Day 5 — Faith and Patience
Read: Hebrews 6:12; 12:1–3
Reflect: Faith receives what God has promised; patience waits for his appointed time. Together they resist sluggishness and carry us forward. We imitate faithful saints, but our eyes finally rest on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of faith. He has already entered the inheritance and will bring his people home.
Gospel Focus: Christ is the true Heir who shares his inheritance with sinners united to him. You do not wait to earn a place in God’s family; you wait as a child whose Brother and Forerunner has gone ahead.
Question: Where do you most need faith in God’s word and patience with God’s timing?
Pray: Faithful Savior, fix my eyes on you. Give me faith to receive your promise, patience to await its fulfillment, and grace to follow until hope becomes sight. Amen.
